School Days Timelines: Fourth Grade

*I’m blogging through my school years—third grade and before can be found here.*

Fourth grade was a year of ups and downs.  I loved third grade so, so, so much that truthfully, I don’t know if any year could have compared to it.  In fourth grade, I was in a combination class of 4th and 5th graders.  It was kind of strange being mixed in with kids an entire year older.  Thankfully, the big, bad 5th graders were nice to me.

A few memories that stand out:

  • It was our town’s 200 year anniversary that year, so we had a writing contest in which we wrote letters about what we discovered in our good old hometown, which was near a lot of the Gold Rush towns of California.  I got into character and wrote my letter as a character named “Griffith” since their weren’t many female miners.  Well, I won, and my certificate was made out to “Griffith.”  Whoopsie!  Still, I won, so suck on that.
  • Still, my aforementioned third grade boyfriend, and his best friend called me “Griffith” for the rest of the year and would whistle the Andy Griffith theme song whenever possible to torture me.  I still hate that song.
  • My teacher that year was…interesting.  I didn’t like her at all, mostly because she HUMILIATED me one day.  She always sat in a director’s chair, and one day, she wore a long skirt.  I dropped my pencil near her chair and crawled on the ground to pick it up, when my teacher announced loudly, “AMY IS TRYING TO LOOK UP MY SKIRT!”  Except that I wasn’t.  I was getting my pencil.  Way to go, teacher FAIL.
  • I met who would be my best friend for the next five years, a girl named Jessica.  We started spending time together at the end of the year, and slowly became inseparable.  I loved swimming in her pool, she loved dinner with my family.  My memories with her are some of my best ever.
  • The Big Bummer of Fourth Grade was when all of the other classes got to go on an overnight field trip…and my class didn’t.  I’m not sure why we weren’t permitted to go, but ugh.  I was really, really sad.

Overall, fourth grade was a mix of good and bad—not my favorite year, but not my worst year, either.

This is a really great series. Reading about all your memories brings back so many of my own. Even some I completely forgot I had. I’m looking forward to reading all the ones to come.

I’m really enjoying these too! I can’t remember my school years nearly as well though :)

What a weird comment by your teacher. I would expect that out of, say, one of the boys in your class. But the teacher? Oddball.

just wanted to let you know that i am really loving your elementary school timelines. i have to know – are they going all the way through middle school? if so, that would be both awesome and traumatic.
the last few ‘school days’ entries have been especially fun to read because i remember some of these things happening – like the festivities of the bicentennial and your nutty 4th grade teacher. and if it makes you feel better, i don’t think the andy griffith thing made it to mrs. maxwell’s class.
have a great week friend…excited to see you saturday.
love you.
