This year was full of fun nights, huddled over cups of coffee, out dancing and spending time with my friends and family. It was difficult to pick just one night that could be declared “the best!”
Still, I think that a date night Andrew and I shared back in April 2009 was the best. We both love food, but we don’t do a lot of fancy dinners out. This time, we went to a delicious steak and seafood place in the middle of the week. I enjoyed the best filet mignon I’ve ever had, amazing stuffed shrimp and creme brulee. We talked and laughed and enjoyed a nice night together for no special reason, other than wanting a date night. It was lovely. Life at that point was a bit stressful: I was awaiting to hear whether or not I’d have a teaching job this year and I was working hard to finish up my credential so I would no longer be an intern. It was great to get away from the stresses of life and just enjoy one anothers company on a random weeknight.
One thing I’ve come to realize is that when you live with someone, it’s easy to forget about having those special nights. You get used to having them around all the time: when you wake up, when you come home at night, when you go to sleep. It’s easy to forget that you need special time together, designated just for hanging out and really connecting.

I love those unexpected nights out. It seems, at least in my experience, that the more you plan and the more you expect from a “date”, it tends to let you down a bit. But those spontaneous dates that pop up here and there are so wonderful! It’s so nice to relax and have a couple hours to just enjoy the food and each other (especially when steak is involved! YEAH!).
We have McCormick & Schmick’s up here, too, and I LOVE it. Do they have an awesome happy hour down there, too? Soooo tasty.

I just found your blog via Gwen Bell’s Best of 2009 Challenge, and I’m loving it so far! My best night out this year was a random date night as well. And you’re right, when you live with someone, it’s easy to take them for granted. Nights like these make you remember why you started living together in the first place! =)
