I've had a similar experience- being in a really poor, tough time in my life, and working as a waitress with my Bachelor Degree. It's not as direct as George giving you that money for a reason, but I've had customers tip me WAY more than needed "just because". Even that little deed has made me want to pass that amazing feeling of "someone noticed me and appreciated me in this world" on to someone else. Great story- we should all do these little things more often! THAT is cool.
