The good, the bad and the ugly

The absolutely FANTASTIC, best news ever, happy tears kinda thing:

  • My dad went for radiation yesterday and the doctor said they are going to stop treatment.  Not because it’s untreatable, but because THE CANCER IS GONE.  Like, the tumor fell off and it looks like chemo and radiation did what it needed to do.  There will be a few more checks, but things are looking great, and we are so happy and celebrating this amazing news.  What a blessing!

The good:

  • I saw Ingrid Michaelson and David Gray, two of my all-time favorite artists, play an amazing acoustic show last night.  It was amazing!  I love concerts, and this one was exceptional.
  • I have Winter Break in just 2 weeks, a blog friends meet-up  and dreamy SF weekend next weekend, a production of the Nutcracker, an Illinois vacation and ANOTHER blog meet-up  and lots of fun, holiday goodness happening the next few weeks.  My heart is so full lately.

The bad:

  • Our new upstairs neighbor plays music at FULL VOLUME all day and all night.  The walls are thin.  It is beyond annoying.

The ugly:

  • I am having my wisdom teeth pulled today.  Please, for the love of goodness, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR TALE OF WOE IN MY COMMENTS.  I’ve heard it all: the dry sockets, the pain, the blood, the gauze, the awful.  I am choosing to believe that I’ll be fine since my teeth are already through my gums and vicodin works for me that I’ll be fine.  I’ll let you know if I’m wrong, and once this is over, I’ll listen to your terrible stories of awful, but I am scared to death already.  Thank you for your understanding.

What’s going on in your world?

  • How about a “how easy it was” wisdom teeth story? When I was 17 I had seven wisdom teeth removed the day before Thanksgiving. I never had to take a single pain pill and I ate turkey and dressing the next day. My face swelled a little, but that was it! You’ll do great!

  • That’s so! amazing and wonderful and YAY about your dad.

Also: my wisdom teeth being extracted was the single easiest dental-related appointment of my life. I never had to take a pain pill and it was a great excuse to eat as much liquid awesome (see: smoothies, ice-cream, shakes) as I wanted. (I hope it goes well!)

  • If for some reason it is awful- it will only be awful for a day or two. Best thing about the mouth- it heals really fast. My experience was awful, but short lived, then it was right back to normal.

  • Congrats to your dad, that’s amazing news!

And instead of a “woe is me story” I’ll give you my truth. When I got my wisdom teeth taken out it really wasn’t so bad (even though they were ALL impacted). When I woke up they gave me this ice pack that wraps around your head to help with the swelling and I got a chocolate milkshake afterward. I didn’t even have any nausea (which scared me most).

You’ll do great, just take this time to relax and recuperate. Milkshakes are your best friend and just don’t try super chewy food for a while.

Congrats on your dad! What a relief…

Regarding wisdom teeth… I had four taken out… beyond easy. I took one pain pill the night after I had the surgery, and that’s it. I didn’t need it afterwards. The most difficult part was when my stitches came out a week later on their own. Don’t worry, just rinse with salt water alot, go easy on them (don’t eat, like, triscuits or something ridiculous like that) and keep the sockets clean and you’ll be just fine.

That’s wonderful news about your dad!!! Just in time for Christmas!!

Good luck with the wisdom teeth – mine weren’t that bad – no swelling and I was back to normal after 2 days. Hopefully yours will be the same!

  • So so so happy to hear about your dad!! :)

Good luck with your wisdom teeth. Just remember, it will all be over soon. I have a Tale of Woe that I won’t share, but my woe didn’t last forever!

  • Yay!! Awesome news about your dad!! The best Christmas present you could ever have received.

I’ll be thinking of you and your teeth. Will your dentist let you bring them home in a jar?

    Ok, just kidding.

Except I kind of do think that would be awesome…

  • Yay for Dad – an answered prayer fo sho!

My wisdom teeth “pull” is a ditto to others here. I had a prescription for Lori-tabs that I never had to take… Plus, no swelling.

  • This was my story when I got my wisdom teeth removed: passed out right when the doctor told me to count backwards. Woke up later, it had all been done. Went home dizzy and had no pain or problems whatsoever, but used the excuse to eat tons of popsicle and ice cream (you know, how ice reduces inflammation and all). It was awesome!

  • Yay about your dad! What a miracle! Merry Christmas!

And while I have a tale of woe, my husband thought getting his teeth out was a walk in the freaking park. And he just looooves telling everyone how easy it was. Maybe I’ll get him to leave a comment.

And the wisdom teeth, well mine is a story of pain and woe, but I worked hard and was able to play flute again within a week (which was a big no-no btw). Hope it goes well! Enjoy the milkshakes and smoothies!

  • I am so happy to hear about the news of your dad! That is so amazing and is a GREAT way to kick off the holiday season, huh? :)

I have no wisdom teeth stories, since mine are still sitting safely in my mouth. My dentist always asks me if they bother me and I always say no so I’m hoping I can go a few more years before they get taken out! Good luck!

  • I’m so so so happy to hear about your dad. That is WONDERFUL news! Especially right before Christmas! My heart is smiling.

My wisdom teeth experience was actually FINE. I was prescribed valium beforehand, which I was to take an hour before the procedure. Then they put me under with a combo of nitrous and conscious sedation with an IV. I woke up when it was done feeling super loopy and my mom laughed at me. Then I drank milkshakes all day. And had some good drugs. I didn’t get any infections, dry sockets, swelling, bruising or anything like that. I didn’t even take any time off work. So here’s hoping your experience goes smoothly!

  • That is just fantastic news about your dad! What a wonderful Christmas present. We’re nine years into my dad’s cancer now, and still hoping for good news.

Good luck with your teeth! :)

  • YAY!!! Amazing news about your dad, I can’t imagine how happy you must be, and I’m that happy for you!!

Don’t worry – David’s sister and her boyfriend both her their wisdom teeth out on the same day – he was fine in a day, and she was only a bit puffy for a couple more. I’ll be thinking of you and sending pain-free thoughts your way x

    [Reply]

  • “Both her their wisdom teeth” doesn’t make a whole lot of sense does it. That should say both HAD. I blame my new acrylics. I’ve never had long nails before :)

    [Reply]

  • Here ya go, a tale where everything goes well and without complications – YES, THEY HAPPEN.

I didn’t even go under, just had nitrous and freezing. Was prescribed tylenol 3, had to change my gauze the first day, didn’t even finish my prescription. Was ready to travel the day after.

    See? It’s not that bad.

  • Such great news about your dad!!

And I’m so jealous you got to see David Gray! I missed his show when he came through Boston, and I wanted to see him live so, so badly.

And, lastly, enjoy lots of ice cream and other such soft things this weekend. :)

  • Wonderful news about your dad! Looking forward to meeting you later this month! Call the cops on the upstairs neighbor! And if it makes you feel any better, I had a very smooth experience getting wisdom teeth pulled; hope yours was, too!

  • The news about your dad made me jump for joy! Hopefully it stays away for good =) Man, wish I could be in ChiTown when you meet up with Nilsa! Would be SO fun.

I had no issues with my teeth getting pulled; just pain so hopefully your experience is similar to mine.

    Happy Friday!

And my wisdom teeth story isn’t ugly, actually. I remember being really drugged up and then my two best friends brought me ice cream. So, make sure someone brings you ice cream. :)

  • Haha. I’ll leave you some good news, the wisdom teeth thing isn’t all too shabby…having people wait on you and bring you yummy soft foods = win in my book.
