Rest in peace, friend.

I lost a good friend yesterday:

coffeepot

Yes, that is my coffee pot.  And no, that isn’t my house, it’s my classroom floor.

One thing you learn quickly as a teacher is just how much TIME you’ll be spending in your classroom.  I typically arrive at work anywhere from an hour to two hours BEFORE the first bell even rings.  Several days a week, I am there long past the end of the day.  This means that I want to be as comfortable as possible.

For me, this means having constant access to caffeine.  Lots of it.  Since I don’t have the money to hit up Starbucks every day (soooo much money!), I brought my tiny, 4-cup coffee pot to live at school.  I buy yummy coffee and every morning, when I arrive on campus, I make my little pot of coffee before setting about grading papers or lesson planning.  Or reading blogs, if I’m being honest.  It makes my morning happy, and I look forward to it every day—a little moment of silence before I am overwhelmed by the adolescents.

Yesterday, I was REALLLYYY looking forward to my coffee.  See, I’d read Ashley’s great post and had fresh half-and-half to add to my coffee and was really looking forward to a healthier start to my morning.  I readied my water and added my grounds, and turned on my coffee pot and…

NOTHING.

Nothing.  Not a sound, not a gurgle, not an anything.  And then I cried.

Okay, so there were no tears, but there was much internal angst.  I went to the teacher behind me, who I thought had a coffee pot, and she explained that she’d recently switched to Folger’s Singles.  Which, in my book?  Isn’t even coffee.  It’s coffee-flavored tea.

Needless to say, yesterday was a longgggg day.  And I can’t wait to go buy a new coffee pot so that I can once again have happy mornings.

  • My heart just broke into a million pieces. A happy morning is so, so important. And people still BUY Folgers? What the?

I know it’s probably not as convenient at school, but I don’t use a coffee maker anymore – I’m a French Press gal all the way. It brings out the flavor of the coffee sooo much more, and it’s stronger :-) You could use one of those electric kettles to heat up the water quickly, then VOILA! Coffee!

P.S. I forget if I commented on your new layout…it is BEAUTY-FUL! Totally rocks. Go you!

  • Ahhh! I love that you have a Mr. Coffee pot, too!! I live by mine. Got it for like $14.99 at Target nearly four years ago, and I can honestly say I would burst into tears if it broke on me. Best $15 I’ve thrown down…maybe EVER.

  • Awwww no! My fiance just made the move from the 16 hour days of a pro football coach to teaching, which I though would mean more time together – but you’re totally right, he’s there the same 2 hours before the first bell and at least an hour after everybody’s gone home, then planning for the next day – I totally have respect for teachers!!

I had a similar experience the other day – I have 2 computers, my main PC I use for everything and an older one I have hooked up to my TV. I download stuff on my main one, shove it on a USB stick and plug into the TV PC, and voila – no more need for piles of discs!! I’d had to get a little device to convert it to video out so it would actually recognise the TV as a monitor – and the other day I sat down, plugged everything in…. and… nothing. The little guy had blown. So we’ve spent this week huddled around Main PC watching stuff on a teeny little screen instead :(

That’s absolutely horrible!! I can’t survive without my coffee in the morning. The Starbucks Instant Coffee is actually really good. I keep some in my purse for my afternoon cup (when I don’t want to drink an entire pot and be bouncing off the wall). I want a French Press real bad – it really does make the coffee taste better.

  • I had a coffee pot at my desk at my last ad agency job. I was often there by 6am and stayed til 10 or so… it was crucial!

  • Think of this as a nice chance to upgrade.

  • Oh I hate when these die!! The caffeine withdrawal that I suffer is definitely pain enough to make sure I always buy a new one within 6 hours of my coffee machine breaking. It’s deadly! lol

  • I’m not a coffee drinker, but I’d think that no matter where you work, it’d be important to have access to good coffee whenever you want/need it. Can you file the coffee pot under teacher’s expenses?! =)

  • Nothing will fuck up your day more than something unexpectedly breaking. And if that something is your caffeine delivery system?! FORGET ABOUT IT. Just go home, go to bed, and start over tomorrow.

  • Oh, no. No no no. I simply cannot get through the day without my morning coffee. At least not on weekdays. I would buy you a new one myself if I could. Andrew’s Fun Friday is SO EASY this week… except that would mean waiting till Friday.
