I adore fall. It’s crisp mornings, sunny days, chilly evenings and lovely weather. I love its activities: apple picking, pumpkin everything, sweater-wearing. And more than anything, I love its bright palette of orange and yellow.
Except for the fact that it’s a result of everything dying. I get a bit nostalgic during this season: it marks the end of something. And then comes winter, which has historically been a rough time for me, with all its drab and gray.
Last year, I read something about fall being a time for clearing away the old, as we sweep away the leaves and remnants of the seasons before, and winter as a time to consider what we want to renew in the spring. I like this view of things; it makes things seem productive instead of sad, and I’ve been thinking about it a lot, in terms of what things I want less of, and what I want more of as these next few seasons progress.
Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:
- Less wanting/needing/demanding new “stuff”…more being grateful for what I’ve got…
- Less time spent worrying…more time spent enjoying…
- Less money spent on dumb things…more money saved for adventures yet to come…
- Less counting calories and weighing in…more whole, real food, more running and yoga
- Less TV…more books, writing, exploring…
- Less laziness (especially as weather tempts me!)…more days spent being active…
- Less overcommitment…more showing up 100% for what I *do* want to do…
- Less letting myself feel stuck…more proactive work towards busting out of my rut…
- Less drinking Diet Coke…more water and tea…
- Less guilt/sadness/anger/frustration…more gratitude for what is
What do you want less and more of?

LOVE this post!
Love this list. I think we all need a little bit of less/more list executing in our lives.
Thanks for sharing!
less thinking; more doing.
I am so with you on both how you used to feel about these changing seasons, and how you’re trying to feel about them now! Hopefully we both do less and more of what’s good for us this year!
I love this. If I substitute “coffee” for your “diet coke,” we’d have the same exact list
Less self-hatred, more self-love.
Less tired, more rested.
Less frantic, more Zen.
Less wanting, more satisfied.
Less living small, more living large.
xo
Love this post from @justatitch http://ow.ly/6HyNI I am going to think about what I need more and less of in my life.
Less emotional eating // More emotional writing
Less feeling flustered // More living in the moment
Less worrying about everything // More remembering everything will work out
Such a good idea, Amy. You rock. <3
Less procrastinating, more doing
Less waiting for “what’s next,” more enjoying what’s now
Less mindless internet, more finishing projects
I hear you SO loud and clear on the less worrying…
Love the blog layout, btw! I may be late with that one, but I dooo!
This is an amazing list. I need to write something like this!
I need less self-doubt and more happiness in what I have right now.
Less lost hours on the Internet / More productive use of my time
Less worrying about what could go wrong / More being thankful and appreciative of what’s going right
Less money spent / More money saved
Less clothes in my closet and drawers / More room for new things post-baby
Amy, cannot tell you how much I love this post. Going to take some time a write my own.

One of the things I didn’t like about living in San Francisco was the lack of spring and fall. And now that you write this post, I am extremely nostalgic for missing fall this year, my first one back living in the South.
