Less/More

I adore fall. It’s crisp mornings, sunny days, chilly evenings and lovely weather. I love its activities: apple picking, pumpkin everything, sweater-wearing. And more than anything, I love its bright palette of orange and yellow.

Except for the fact that it’s a result of everything dying. I get a bit nostalgic during this season: it marks the end of something. And then comes winter, which has historically been a rough time for me, with all its drab and gray.

Last year, I read something about fall being a time for clearing away the old, as we sweep away the leaves and remnants of the seasons before, and winter as a time to consider what we want to renew in the spring. I like this view of things; it makes things seem productive instead of sad, and I’ve been thinking about it a lot, in terms of what things I want less of, and what I want more of as these next few seasons progress.

Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:

  • Less wanting/needing/demanding new “stuff”…more being grateful for what I’ve got…
  • Less time spent worrying…more time spent enjoying…
  • Less money spent on dumb things…more money saved for adventures yet to come…
  • Less counting calories and weighing in…more whole, real food, more running and yoga
  • Less TV…more books, writing, exploring…
  • Less laziness (especially as weather tempts me!)…more days spent being active…
  • Less overcommitment…more showing up 100% for what I *do* want to do…
  • Less letting myself feel stuck…more proactive work towards busting out of my rut…
  • Less drinking Diet Coke…more water and tea…
  • Less guilt/sadness/anger/frustration…more gratitude for what is

What do you want less and more of?
