I’m absolutely obsessed with the movie “You’ve Got Mail.” It’s probably my all-time favorite movie, one I watch as often as possible, both on TV and my very own DVD. I want to be Kathleen Kelly, with her cute little wardrobe and her adorable store and aahhhh, she is just the cutest thing ever. One of my favorite lines comes from an email she sends to Joe Fox: “Once I read a story about a butterfly in the subway, and today, I saw one! It got on at 42nd and off at 59th, where, I assume, it was going to Bloomingdales to buy a hat that will turn out to be a mistake, as almost all hats are.”
You see, I have this thing about hats. I love them. I don’t really know why. Up until college, I’d never even WORN a hat. I was wandering through American Eagle one day, when I stumbled upon an adorable beanie. I tried it on and it was cute. Like, really cute. I forked over my $15 and wandered out, a happy woman.
An obsession was born.
Hats really are the curly-haired girl’s best friend. I get to cover my crazy hair on rainy, foggy days. Instead of getting out of control, I can let my hair go wild, but then set a hat atop it and it looks adorable. I now own upwards of ten hats: beanies, hats with bills, knit hats in a variety of colors and styles. And I love them.
Sadly, not everyone shares my affinity for hats. In fact, one very important person hates my hats.
On our second date, Andrew and I met up late after one of his tennis games. He took me to Applebee’s (WE ARE SO CLASSY!) and since it was freezing and rainy, I threw on a cream colored hat with a sweater and a scarf. I thought it looked cute. Jaunty, even. Breezy. I strolled in late, and found him at the table.
As Andrew was gazing at me in what I first found to be an adoring manner, I noticed that he was staring. Staring at my hat. Finally, between bites of dinner, he stopped and said, “So. The hat, huh? You wear those often?”
I nodded and smiled. I explained how cute they are and how they help my hair and all of those good reasons. And then I asked the dreaded question: “Do you like it?”
Andrew feigned interest, acted as if he liked them. But I could tell. I KNEW. He hated them. Andrew hated my favorite winter accessory.
For over a year, I chose not to wear hats in front of Andrew. Sure, when we weren’t hanging out, I’d rock a beanie and when it rained, I’d cover my head with my pink beret. But the minute I saw Andrew? The hat came off. I never, ever let him see me in a hat again. And he begged. He told me he was wrong, that he thought I was cute and that hats were fetching and OH MY GOODNESS, PLEASE WOMAN, DO NOT LET SOMETHING I SAID ON OUR SECOND DATE RUIN THIS RELATIONSHIP.
Seriously, if anything said on our first 15 dates were the basis of our current relationship, we’d be screwed.
To this day, I wear my hats reluctantly around him, though he claims he’s changed his ways, and actually loves my hats now. And no, I was never one of those girls who didn’t wear something because HE didn’t like it. I just…wore them selectively.
Does your significant other hate anything you wear? What is your fave accessory during the winter?

Hats are the best – I secretly have huge poofy hair that I straighten every day and it never fails to explode in a big frizzy mess ANY time it rains/gets humid etc. It used to be bandanas in the summer but I can’t get away with those any more
Hats in the winter are an absolute must

I’m a huge fan of scarves in the winter
Hats are good too, but only certain ones look decent on me. Baseball hat? Forget it! Beanie? No way. I think I can pull off a bucket type hat, but thats about it!

Yes- I used to have these black and white Sketchers that I absolutely loved. I got them on super sale and thought they were the cutest sneakers ever. He hated them! I still wore them for a while but got rid of them when they got old. I need a new pair soon and I still want to get a pair in that same style, which he still thinks are ugly.
And no fave winter accessory here, as it doesn’t get too cold.

I can definitly relate to this. My boyfriend is very fashion conscious. Not in a trendy way but in a classy ‘oh I just threw this on” way (although he probably agonized over that plain t-shirt and jeans). But this fashion sense means that whenever I try to put a new ‘look’ together I get the strained “that looks ok” while his eyes scream in horror. It’s slightly disconcerting.

S- You really need to find something sexier to wear to bed. I’m not a fan of those green shorts.
C- I don’t care. Goodnight.
It’s my all time favorite movie too. I cry every single time.

That’s so funny that you love hats and think they’re a curly haired girl’s best friend. I have crazy curls and HATE wearing hats. Maybe it’s the length of my hair, but I think my hair looks frizzy and more crazed when it comes out of the bottom of a hat. I’d much rather just throw my hair up!

first, jaunty.
second, matt is not pleased to see a few things in my wardrobe: my cozy at-home-only (okay, and sometimes-under-pants-at-work) leg warmers and some of my ‘teacher’ shirts that he thinks make me look older than my years (to him florals = Grandma).
p.s. enjoy your next two days…then sweet, sweet break! love you.

I so agree on the hats! I LOVE them! Scarves also make me happy and most often in the winter I am seen wearing both, inside as well as outside, which is kinda, well, my thing I guess. That or it is much to cold in my house!

I’ve never been big into hats because they’re hard to wear unless my bangs are cut juuuuuuust so- but since right now they are, I’ve been rocking a couple.
I like them because with my short hair I feel even more like I’m from the 1920s.

I love hats but they look HORRIBLE on me. Yet I continue to buy impossibly-cute hats that I never, ever wear. Sad face.

My ex once said something about my capri shorts…. and I never wore them ever ever again.

“I love daisies” “You told me.” “They’re so friendly. Don’t you think daisies are the friendliest flower?”
(I am also mildly obsessed with You’ve Got Mail. If “mildly” means “I love to quote it and have seen it enough times to basically recite it verbatim.”)

I’m currently wearing a hat. It’s one of those knit floppy beanie beret things and it’s mustard yellow. And I’m wearing it because I’m on my third-day, dry-shampoo hair… but I washed my bangs so I’m sure this is totally okay. Anyway! I love hats! I think the secret to hat-wearing – or any clothing wearing! – is to wear it like you know you look great! Which I’m sure you do.

I absolutely LOVE hats. One of the greatest hats I ever had was one that I purchased in Dublin, Ireland. But I lost it at Disneyland and was heartbroken. I just think hats can really make an outfit. Even if it’s a lame outfit, throwing a hat into the mix ups the cuteness factor by a lot.
My Andrew doesn’t like my big earrings. Um, sorry dude. I’m still gonna wear ‘em.

My favorite accessory for winter (if you can call what we have in Southern California winter) is my peacoat. I’m pretty sure there’s something wrong with my head that makes all hats look terrible on me; I gave up on them years ago.
The Kathleen Kelly line I always repeat is the one where she says something like, “I live a small life.”

my ex told me one day that he didn’t like my slouchy boots that much.
i’ll let you connect the dots on that one.
