Get Listed: Words I struggle to spell

We all misspell words from time to time, yes? I consider myself an outstanding speller, but here are the words that still trip me up:

opportunity
peculiar
region
business
vacuum
conscience
rhinoceros
nitrous
fiery
vermicelli

What words do YOU struggle to spell properly?

PARAPHERNALIA. It’s not like it’s one that I have to spell often but I can never, ever, ever get it right. Can’t even guess at it.

  • A Little Coffee

Wait, vacuum has only one C? Clearly that one should be on my list too then.

The ones that always get me:

    recommendation
    accumulation
    broccoli

Something about words with several syllables, where some of them have double consonants and some of them are only single, trips me up. I can never remember which one is double and which is single. I ALWAYS want to spell broccoli as “brocolli”.

  • Well… Whenever I go to write “about it,” I ALWAYS mistype and write “abou tit.” And, uh, sometimes, my spell checker doesn’t catch this. Meaning, more than once, I have sent e-mails to coworkers with “I don’t know much abou tit, but I’m happy to get together and talk it through with you.”

    AWESOME.

  • “Vacuum” gets me every danged time too!

  • -occasionally (always want to put double s)
-separate (want to put an e where the a is)

What a great idea for a post! Now maybe I will spell them correctly since I actually looked them up to post on here.

  • Vacuum gets me too. I think its the double u’s. To this day I can’t spell tomorrow without sounding it out. Tom or row.

  • How often do you need to say “vermicelli,” much less SPELL it?! ;)

I have trouble with: restaurant, mischievous, received. And “fiery” always gets me, too!

  • Exercise – I always want to shoehorn a c in after the x. Oh the shame!

  • Judgment trips me up – I always want to put in an “e” after the “g.”

And I hate that “forty” doesn’t have a “u.” What the eff?

For some reason, I get particularly violent when people misspell “lose” and “loose.” Especially when they do it consistently. Ah, the trials and tribulations of being an editor. Love the Oatmeal comic – it makes me feel better about my life’s work!

  • Detroit gets me every now and then when I’m not paying attention and q words all look the same to me and I frequently confuse “quite” with “quiet.”

  • I always struggle to spell vacuum right too and the word “ridiculous” gets to me too!

  • Definitely vacuum. I always want to add an extra c. Broccoli and zucchini trip me up, too. Oh, and personnel! I usually add an extra L to the end.

  • Restaurant always trips me up. I’m a pretty good speller otherwise, but I still make sure my spell check is always on!

Vacuum! And privilege (did I spell that correctly?) The ones in the picture on your post always bug me too, when other people write them. Especially your/you’re, because when I’m writing, I’m saying “you are” to myself, and how can someone else not catch that!? Errr!

  • Fortunately and unfortunately!! Grrrr.

  • license (seriously, every time)
conscious (did I even get it right that time?)

    :)

    love it.

my students constantly misspell definitely. it’s definitely, not definatly!

  • license
    inadvertently
    curriculum

  • oh my god, how fun. i relate to so many of these, even tho i can be such a grammar snob.

in addition to those already listed:

    colonel
    subtlety
    scissors
and i really really really don’t like to spell Restaurant

    xoxo

  • Burrito! It’s those double consonants…I never know where to put them ;)

BTW, I found you through Erin T.’s mutterings. I absolutely adore your blog and can’t wait to read more!

well i was typing a message once after far too many pirate jokes but things had (seemingly) quietened down. i said to my best friend who was at the sink making the salad, “wait, does tomorrow have two Ms or two Rs?” and she yelled back right away “two ARRRRRRRRRRS!!!!” sending us both into hysterics.

the different ways of spelling its confuse me. its so annoying!!

  • Carrie

    Receive.

I always put the I before the E. The worst part is that I write this word multiple times a day and I still always get it wrong! You would think at some point I would just figure it out.

I also have trouble with words that have the double consonants (like brocolli) and cracked up at the person who wrote about the issue with writing “abou tit”. Totally done that.

  • There are many, but one that comes to mind is MAGIC. I even typed it with a J just now, lol! Fail.
