Remember this post? The one in which I admitted my complete hatred for laundry, and also that it’s basically defeated me in every way possible because I both hate it and refuse to do it.
Well, guess what? Laundry, you win.
I’m sure my mom is going to be ashamed (HI MOM!) but on Friday, after realizing just how long it’d been since I washed clothes and really, truly having nothing to wear, I spent a significant amount of time Yelp-ing the hell out of where exactly I could take my clothing to be washed, cheaply, quickly and well.
See, the laundry problem was bad enough when I had a washer-dryer in my apartment. Now, our laundry area is in the back yard. That’s a pain. Also, there’s the issue of our creepy apartment manager, who I am sort of convinced would just love to get me alone in said laundry area. No, really, this man is SO CREEPY that when he entered our apartment on move-in day to talk with Andrew and make sure things were going okay, he just stood awkwardly, staring at us until my dad finally said, “HELLO, CAN I HELP YOU?” and he finally announced who he was. My dad confessed that he thought he was a derelict, and yeah, so did I. But no, sadly, he is the person we must make contact with any time we need anything. This means that I rarely need anything.
Anyways, after I finally found a magical place that did laundry cheaper than anyone else in town. And Sacramentans, if you think I’m going to link it, you’re high, because I need this place to stay cheap and hidden and awesome. I dropped off my clothes, sheets and towels, and four hours and $30 later, they were clean, folded, perfection. They smelled SO GOOD. Everything was ironed.
My laundry has never looked so good.
While yes, I realize that this is the epitome of lazy, it also really does make sense money and time wise. Our laundry center on site would cost close to $20 to do all my clothes. Add that to time and the cost of soap and dryer sheets, and of course my PRICELESS HATRED of laundry, and well…
I don’t think I’ve spent a better $30 recently.
So, judge me if you will, but at least I won’t be a smelly, wrinkled mess while you’re doing so.
Would you ever use a laundry service?

Yes, I would if it meant avoiding a run-in with a creepy landlord. I hate laundry too and if you found a great place (I tried a few places when I lived in San Francisco), then all the better. Money well spent!
That sounds PERFECT. I don’t mind doing the laundry, but I hate folding everything!
It would cost you $20 to do all your clothes on site?! Wow, that’s lame. In that case, having someone else do it for $10 more sounds like a very good plan.
Yes! I absolutely would, except, I can’t trust other people with my stuff, seriously to me that’s worse than having to do laundry…and it would be a bit more shameful for me since I now live in a house with a washer/drier (aww but I do have to go in the smelly basement?!). I admire you giving in to your weakness and working with it!
when the wasbund and i first moved in together, we didn’t have a washer and dryer. i meant to go to do the laundry, i really did…
but no, i waited till EVERYTHING was dirty. as in four or six trash bags full of dirty clothes, sheets and towels.
walked into the laundromat on my first day off in forever, resigned to my fate…
and noticed a little sign…
“wash, dry, fold, $.50 per pound”
forty dollars.
best purchase ever.
i went home and painted my toenails and took a nap while they did my laundry. score.
Because I live in the city, I HAVE to get my laundry done like that. Well, I could spend hours of my life in a laundromat… but why? So I drop it off at a place across the street and then pick it up that night or the next day. It’s about $10-$12 every 2 weeks and it is AWESOME and I’m going to be seriously sad when I live in a house or apartment with laundry.
I can relate to bad laundry prices. At my previous apt, it cost $3.25 per load. Um, INSANITY. (I miss the days of college laundry when it was $1 to wash and $0.75 to dry!!) It wasn’t horrible, because the laundry was next door to my apt, but the prices! So instead I took my laundry to my parents nearly every wknd and my mom did them. (Ahem, yes I am 25.) I moved last week though into a place with a washer/dryer in my apt and I love it. I don’t mind laundry. Dishes on the other hand? Hate.
Sounds like you found a good deal with the laundry thing though! I should’ve considered something like that before.
If we didn’t have a washer/dryer in our apartment, I would totally pay to get it done. I have no time to sit and feed quarters into machines at the laundromat! That said, I absolutely can’t wait until I move into my own house and get to BUY a washer/dryer…I love shopping for major appliances! Pretty! Shiny!
Honestly, sounds like it was worth every penny!! And your clothes were ironed too?! Hell ya!!! lol! It’s ok, when I move in a few weeks I’m hiring someone to come clean my fridge & stove for me! *blush* Thats how much I hate to do that!!
I hate laundry too! and washing the dishes by hand! awful.
I admit, I’d be much more willing to do my laundry if I have a washer/dryer in my apartment/house. There’s one in the building I live in now but I hate doing it. lol
I have never thought about going to a service but it sounds oh so nice! Like when our mom’s used to do laundry. It would just show up all folded and pretty lol
I. Am. So. Jealous.
This is basically the best thing ever. $30 and everything is clean and folded and ironed?! That’s awesome.
I for one love doing laundry, but find NO PROBLEM shelling out money for someone to do something you hate. If it makes your life better, than it’s $30 well spent! Or in my case, almost $100, but at least I don’t have to clean my own house.
Laundry services are common in New York. Before my brother moved into a place with an in-unit washer/dryer, he used to drop his clothes off all the time. If I didn’t have my own washer & dryer and hated doing laundry as much as you do, I’d definitely pay someone else to do it. I mean, I hate cleaning my condo and pay someone to clean it. Same line of thinking, right?
I would totally do it if there was a place in town that would do it that cheaply. Sadly, I don’t think there is. At least not in a safe area.
Irish and I used to go to laundromats together, which wasn’t cheap but the people watching? Kind of priceless.
It costs $2.25 per load at my apartment complex. My apartment complex is home to SEVERAL creepy men. It is also home to several families of, like, 20 people (I don’t even know) who are ALWAYS using the machines. $30 to have everything washed, dried, pressed and smelling spring fresh sounds like a good deal to me.
I seriously wish I had a creepy laundry room to justify the expenditure on a laundry service. That way I wouldn’t have woken up this morning to find that the load of clothes tossed in the dryer before bed last night was still wet… because I forgot to push play after it was loaded. Doh!
I kind of love doing laundry. I say that because I lived in an apartment for 2 years where I had to take an old, decrepit elevator down 10 floors to the creepy basement where I would spend $4 per load to do my laundry, where I would encounter nasty people who made me uncomfortable, where I would sometimes come back to find my clothes stolen. So now that I have my own washer and drier conveniently located beside my bathroom? I love it. Love laundry. It helps that there are only 2 of us and “doing laundry” consists of 4 loads spread out over the week. And I don’t fold laundry. Or iron. So I don’t love proper laundry, I love my version of laundry. If I were in your situation? I would be all over that laundry service. Good job finding it
I hate laundry!! I would definitely pay $30 to have it all done for me. Ours is in the basement so it involves a lot of hauling.
I’ve given your blog an award…http://megjustsaying.blogspot.com/2010/08/bloggy-award.html
You mean would I pay someone a measly $30 to do a chore that I despise, with much more care and attention to detail than I would ever give it myself?
Yes. A thousand times yes.
I’d do it. Except, and I’m just gonna say it, I would DEFINITELY not include my, erm, undergarments. But seriously, when you’re having to use coin-operated machines, $30 for a shit-ton of laundry is really a pretty decent deal. Good for you! (And good for you for not sharing your little gem, ha!)
I’d totally pay. The last time I used a laundromat, an old lady hovered over my machine and gawked at my underwear. I’m so glad to have a machine at home now.
good for you but I would have done it!
You know what? I had this moment recently with house cleaning. The Horse Whisperer and I have had myriad arguments over the division of labor, who makes the bigger messes, how much time we each spend on what… and you know what? Paying someone $40 to come in once a month and scrub top to bottom is TOTALLY WORTH IT.
In short: good for you!!!
I am a weirdo who kind of likes to do laundry (I’m really picky about how things are folded and who touches my underwear), but that does sound really heavenly!
While I am all for doing laundry on your own to save money, an innate fear of said landlord dude is actually cause for concern for your safety. So yes, $30 for peace of mind is a great deal.
When I saw your tweets about this, I just knew a blog post celebrating your victory over laundry must be imminent. WOOOO!
Yes, yes, and yes. I also want a butler. And a masseuse. (I am entirely serious.)
I used a laundry service once. Four loads was $90. It was a one time indulgence that I will never use again!
I actually love doing laundry. I am, however, prohibited from doing so by lack of a washer and dryer in my apartment, so I have to scramble to find one or go visit my fam and use theirs. Sounds like you got a hell of a good deal on it though… $30 and it was all taken care of? heck yeah.
